JIS supports students who need extra help through in-school support, a structured learning support process and guidance from our school counselors.
In-School Support Program (ISSP)
The In-School Support Program is offered to students in the English and French Sections from KG3 to Grade 3. It strengthens the basic skills students need to meet the grade-level curriculum.
Students are taken out of their regular English, French and/or Arabic class for one-to-one attention in that subject, with the curriculum modified to meet their needs. The time each student needs depends on motivation, level of proficiency and aptitude. Parents receive a monthly progress report, and once the student can cope with the grade-level program, they return to the mainstream class.
Learning Support Procedure
- Teacher referral. After trying different teaching approaches, the homeroom or subject teacher refers the student to the Section Coordinator/Head using the Referral Form/Discipline Form. For academic concerns the teacher may also involve the Subject Coordinator; for behavioral concerns, the Section Coordinator. The referral must show evidence of the differentiated instruction or strategies already used.
- Observation. The Section Coordinator observes the student in class, writes a report confirming the learning or behavioral difficulties or special needs, and forwards it to the Academic & Guidance Counselor.
- Review. The Counselor reviews the case and meets the Senior Management Team to decide on the intervention.
- Parents informed. The Counselor meets the student’s parents to explain the school’s intervention strategies.
- Support plan. The Counselor passes the student’s file, with the prescribed intervention, to the Learning Support Coordinator, who plans the strategy and assigns the student to a Support Staff member with study materials.
- Monthly report. The Support Coordinator sends a monthly report on the student to the Counselor.
